Service Action Proposal
I decided to do my service action proposal with the Autism Society of NC and the president of the organization, Macy Le. Their main goal is to provide volunteering opportunities to students who want to learn about developing disorder and other related factors in this field. They have no upcoming events at the moment, but I propose that we host an event to raise awareness for developmental disorders and their effects. We need to create a more friendly environment for people with disorders and other handicaps instead of treating them like outcasts and like they do not exist.
I have strong feelings toward this proposal because people who have development disorders have always been something that I really cared about and touched my heart. I do not think they are treated properly the majority of the time and that most people do not know that much about the different disorders. I am very happy that I got to learn more about this topic and was able to speak with the Autism Society of NC about it. My experience with the overall progression of the service action proposal was about what I was expecting, but I did not realize we were actually going to be able to set up our own event with a group of our choice when I first started this project. It caught me by surprise and I thought it was extremely neat to be able to set up an event for something that I really care about, because most people do not have the chance to be able to do that. My perspective on my selected service area never changed it is a topic that I believe I was always have a great passion for. Hopefully one day I can have an impact in raising
development disorder and mental health awareness. What impacted my view on this issue the most was seeing people pick on others who have disorders and can help it. That really makes me mad and is why I have always been passionate about this issue. My strengths are being service oriented and helping others, so this went perfectly with this project and I am very glad I was able to do this.
I believe the root problem with the topic I selected is that not enough people know enough about disorders and how they can affect people. We as a society need to raise awareness and make sure every person regardless of who they are, are treated properly. Teamwork and having people that genuinely care and are purposeful definitely would contribute to the success of this project. It would be unsuccessful if people do not care and and just brush this issue off as if it’s not a problem in our society.
This project taught me to be better at time management and to be more purposeful in whatever I am doing. It also taught me how to communicate to other organizations and talk to the organization’s head. It also shows how we need to always stand up for what we believe in regardless of what anybody else thinks and to apply this to my everyday life.
